HIKING IN COSTA DA MORTE
HIKING TOUR IN CAMIÑO DOS FAROS
Author’s trip to the Costa da Morte, known as Camiño dos Faros. Enjoy a one-week hiking trip with guided routes along the Costa da Morte. A coast full of stories of shipwrecks and naval accidents.
The Camiño dos Faros (Lighthouse Route) covers a good stretch of the Costa da Morte. It recovers old fishing and shellfish trails to follow a coastline dotted with lighthouses, paradisiacal beaches and perhaps the least urbanised coastal area in Galicia.
But the Costa da Morte is much more. It is Neolithic, it is the history of maritime circulation. It is fishing. And it is the history of a population that has lived halfway between land and sea.

HIKING AND NATURE IN COSTA DA MORTE
Costa da Morte has a very peculiar orography, with a very rugged coastline, full of small headlands, coves, beaches and small cliffs, as well as a shallow coastline which, together with the harsh sea storms, have given it its name.
In this case, our proposal is not to cover the entire coastline, as it is a very hilly route, with continuous ascents and descents along narrow paths. We have designed a trip in which we will visit some of the most interesting corners of the Camiño dos Faros, which we are sure will not disappoint you.
In our proposal for a trip along the Costa da Morte, we alternate lighthouses, coves, hidden beaches and other endless ones. Paradisiacal areas where, if the weather is good and you are brave enough, we will have time to go for a swim.
Finally, we left the last day of the route for an activity outside the Camiño dos Faros, to visit Monte Pindo and the Ézaro waterfall.
GALICIAN HISTORY AND TRADITIONS
Costa da Morte and Camiño dos Faros is much more than a succession of beaches and lighthouses. Behind every corner of the route there is a piece of history.
Perhaps the most obvious is the succession of shipwrecks that have occurred on its coasts, mainly due to its shallow seabed, real traps for boats in the event of a storm.
But there is much more, from its prehistoric past, with dolmens and forts, to its fishing, shellfishing and inland traditions.
Finally, we think it is essential to know the story of O Man, an eccentric character, but with ideas about conservation and respect for nature and art that are worth knowing and respecting.
TRAVEL PLAN
DAY 1
ARRIVAL AT costa da MORTE
Arrival at accommodation in Galicia. Stop in Malpica to visit the village.
DAY 2
PUNTA NARIGA
Route around the Punta Nariga lighthouse and Niñons. We will cover a section of the first stage of the Camiño dos faros. Always with views of the Sisargas Islands, we will start our journey with a stage that fulfils the main attractions of this adventure: a solitary, challenging lighthouse, as well as a paradisiacal and almost virgin beach.
DAY 3
FROM LAXE TO CAMELLE
In this case, we will cover a good stretch of this route, ending in a very special village, Camelle. Not so much because of the village itself, but because we will get to know the story of O Man, a character in the recent history of the village who was an artist, eccentric and perhaps today much more understood and respected than he was in life.
DAY 4
CABO DO VILÁN
From Camelle to Cabo do Vilán. Perhaps the most spectacular and representative route of the trip, and also the one that gives more sense to the name of this area as Costa da Morte. Dune areas, lonely beaches, beached boats and impregnable lighthouses look very different in good weather than in winter storms.
DAY 5
MUXÍA
The road to Muxía. Muxía has gone from being a fishing village to a crossroads. Camino de Santiago and Camiño dos faros converge in a coastal environment that preserves the beauty of its coastline, despite its sad recent past.
DAY 6
PLAYA DO ROSTRO AND FISTERRE
Rostro beach and Cape Fisterre. Before reaching Cape Fisterre, we will take a beautiful route along Rostro beach, an endless, solitary and impressive beach, perhaps one of the most impressive of the whole trip. An ideal epilogue of the Camiño dos Faros.
DAY 7
MONTE PINDO
We will say goodbye with a hike to Monte Pindo, a mountain with wide views of the entire coastal area and right next to the famous Ézaro waterfalls. One of the few rivers in Europe that flows into the sea in a waterfall!
