ASTURIAN FAR WEST TOUR
TRAVEL AROUND ASTURIAS. THE BEST OF ASTURIAS.
There are not many places where human presence coexists side by side with wildlife, few where traditional culture is so alive and at the same time so unknown. There are territories where isolation has brought many handicaps, like depopulation, forgetfulness and a hard life, but at the same time has guaranteed the survival of ancestral cultures, and the love of a land that will not leave you indifferent.

Traditional culture
We invite you to travel with us to one of these territories, which we call Asturian Far West. The south-western of Asturias and the Laciana Valley in Leon share cultural, linguistic, geographical and historical ties. An encounter with history, nature and popular culture.
Ethnographic sets
It is a trip with small hiking routes and walks in ethnographic ensembles. We will tour three natural parks, two of them declared Biosphere Reserves by UNESCO. Hiking trails are simple walks and mountain routes. Hiking experience is not necessary but good health and a certain decree of fitness are required.
Travel Plan
DAY 1
WE LEAVE BILBAO
We pick you up at the airport, train or bus station and we take you to Oviedo, a city that stands out for its cathedral, its old town and for having several examples of Asturian pre-Romanesque architecture, a unique style all around the world.
DAY 2
Past and present
DAY 3
THESE ROMANS ARE CRAZY
The Romans came through here, too. They did not make large buildings, but important infrastructures throughout this territory, always linked to the exploitation of gold. We will visit its legacy in the Grandas de Salime area, a Castro and some tunnels for water systems. Then we will travel the most hidden areas between Asturias and Galicia to end up in Ibias, a land of bears. We will spend the afternoon in a charming hotel wiet a cute spa included, where we will have a well-deserved rest.
DAY 4
Living among bears
DAY 5
From the mine to the mountain
The Laciana Valley is an ancient coal-mining valley. You will be amazed by its mixture of mining facilities, traditional culture and dream waterfalls. We will make a four-hours route to a forest of ancient yews. We will finish the day in Somiedo
DAY 6
Between brañas, goats and chamois
The Somiedo Natural Park is a geological set of valleys and glacial lakes. There, we will recover some of its “brañas”, stone huts with plant roof. We will start with a short trekking of about two hours to a beautiful “braña”. If we are lucky, the chamois will watch our way. Later on we will make a three-hour route to discover some small caves with some of the best views of the area. We will end the day by saying goodbye to these lands, returning to Bilbao.
