FAIRYTALE LANDSCAPES
“Tapaponga”; is part of a famous Asturian joke, which talks about an hypothetical link between Asturias and Africa. The fact is that Asturias has areas as wild, unknown, impressive or hidden as the huge African continent. In a small territory you can find impressive mountains, fairytale landscapes, ancient trees… Without a doubt, you would need a lot of time to know all this land and its traditions. We will try to make you desire knowing more after a week with us.
TREKKING IN THE MID AND HIGH MOUNTAINS
This is a trekking trip, with routes through med and high mountain areas. Therefore, despite not having technically complicated routes, it is required to be in good physical fit and have a minimum of experience in hiking through mountain areas.
Travel Plan
DAY 1
WE LEAVE BILBAO
We will pick you up from the airport, train or bus station and go to Cangas de Onis, a picturesque village near Picos de Europa.
DAY 2
GOING TO PICOS!!
We will leave Cangas de Onís and head for Covadonga lakes to start a trekking in Picos de Europa, the oldest national park in Spain, which includes a climb to the Requexón peak, with breathtaking views of the western massif of Picos de Europa and a large part of the Cantabria mountain range. On the way back, we will spend the night in Ponga, declared a biosphere reserve by Unesco.
DAY 3
TREKKING AT CORDILLERA CANTABRICA
We will make a journey accross one of the most beautiful landscapes of the Cordillera Cantábrica. We will go trekking from Ventaniella Pass to Tarna Pass, a stretch of the trans-Cantabrian route, with the Picos de Europa behind us and the valleys of León and Asturias on both sides. Pure nature enjoyment! We will spend the night in Oviedo, and we will end up the day with an “espicha”, an informal meal at which traditional asturian “tapas” will not be missing. Its origin dates back to the moment when new cider was tasted directly from the barrel in Spring, a celebration that was shared with family and friends. ‘ The espicha is a social event in which traditional pinchos are eaten and cider, our typical drink, is drunk. It will be a hard day, so we deserve it.
DAY 4
SOMIEDO, THE CLOSEST PARADISE
We will travel to Somiedo, a biosphere reserve famous for its glacial valleys and its beautiful “brañas” (grass pasture areas) . We will visit the Saliencia’s surrounding areas and walk part of the Camín de la Mesa, an old Roman route between Asturias and the centre of the Peninsula. This route is of great geological interest. We will sleep over at Somiedo.
DAY 5
SOMIEDO DESERVES MORE!
We will start another day in Somiedo mountains to tour its brañas, old shepherd’s huts, and admire its glacial valley and the nature. With any luck, the chamois will take their way out to welcome us. Don’t try to run around in the bush like them!
DAY 6
THE BEAR’S LAND
We will wake up in the Cantabrian bear’s domains to visit the natural parks of Cangas del Narcea, Ibias and Degaña. Although it is very difficult to see them, we will walk along their territory. In the afternoon, a pleasant and relaxing surprise will await us in a beautiful rural hotel. Nature rules here…
DAY 7
RETURN TO BILBAO
The return journey awaits us, but we will make a stop halfway to enjoy the coast of Llanes and some of its most charming corners.
